Cabin Bed or Bunk Bed, Which Should I Choose?

cabin bedBefore we can answer this question we must give an open honest description and opinion about each type of bed. Although some people regard these beds as being similar they couldn’t be further apart.

A bunk bed’s primary function is to provide two beds including mattresses, one on top of the other, which is ideal  for a space saving way of accommodating two people in a relatively small area. Hence the reason why bunk beds are often used for siblings  (often boys) sharing rooms together.

The frame of the bed can be made of almost anything these days, but more are commonly made of wood or aluminum and are normally in a 4 poster style with the top bunk accessible through a ladder either attached as part of the frame or separate on the outside.

The cabin bed differs from a bunk bed initially as it normally only has one bed, although you can get cabin beds with guest bed underneath. The bed is raised and varies in height depending on its functionality and could range from anywhere between 1 to 2 meters. The cabin bed like the bunk bed is space saving furniture as the area that has the capacity underneath the bed to be used as storage, whether it be cupboards and drawers or a computer or TV area.

In comparison both type of beds have a similar functionality in terms of space saving which is becoming a more popular decision making factor when it comes to buying any type of furniture. They both can provide a practical but fun aspect when it comes to children, which lets face it, are the most common users of both these types of beds.

So who wins which is the best choice?

I think it comes down to circumstances because if you have a small to medium sized bedroom  that you have to accommodate two children in then i think the bunk bed would win. But if you are wanting to provide a themed bedroom or want to have a TV and PC in the bedroom as well and don’t want the headache of additional furniture or want to have some tastefully concealed storage areas or even a pullout guest bed then its got to be a cabin bed. We should also mention at this point the Platform Bed which can be similar to a cabin bed offering needed storage areas, but the downfall is that it doesn’t the different styles and themes that the cabin bed offers.

For me a cabin bed offers a lot more in terms of practicality and enjoyment and there are so many different types and themes to choose from i’ll guarentee that you will always find something that will suit your requirements.

What Type of Cabin Bed Should I Buy?

I always find that this can be a difficult question to answer as there are many different cabin beds available on the market today. The key question is who is the cabin bed for?

piratebedIf it is for a younger child’s bedroom then there are many different themed cabin beds that will provide comfortable place to sleep combined with a fun area to play. The obvious question would then be whether its going to be a cabin bed for a girl or a cabin bed for a boy. There are many different themed beds for children of both sexes whether it be a princess theme for the girls or a pirate ship theme for the boys creating a different world within the confides of  their bedroom.

I’ve seen forts, cars and boats themes for boys along with Wendy houses and pink fairy castle themes for girls, even some beds with slides which are really fun,  all providing an exciting experience for children of all ages.

If the choice of cabin bed is for an older child or young adult then there are many that provide a comfortable place to sleep combined with space to house a computer or TV underneath. These types are a very common choice and are ideal for just watching TV, playing console games or surfing the internet in a confined area where space is not abundant. Most of these types of cabin beds come with some sort of storage area and even a desk like structure that can be easily used to do school homework or write documents etc.

If the choice of cabin bed is for an adult or a person requiring more storage space there are several types on the market that provide some great and tasteful storage ideas in the forms of drawers and cupboards. A platform bed can offer something similar but the cabin bed still remains the preferred choice as it is another great way of saving on the space required to house a set of drawers or cupboards and is the reason why this type is a popular cabin bed.

Whatever the choice you make will be the right choice, as the cabin bed is a multi-functional space saving piece of furniture regardless of the style or theme you choose. With the current housing climate more and more people are looking at maximising space in their existing homes and are turning to space saving furniture like cabin beds to achieve their goal.

There is nothing better when buying anything especially a large piece of furniture to read people’s reviews on the subject matter to obtain a better insight in to what you are buying.
