Captains Bed
The captains bed is often another name used to refer to a cabin bed but has its own unique style that stands out from other beds. The design of a captains bed is loosely based on the traditional cabin bed that you would expect to see on a boat or a sea fearing vessel where it is traditionally wooden with storage areas underneath, which is where the name originates. On the whole they are an excellent piece of furniture that can provide a stylish comfortable place to sleep combined with a practical way of maximizing space, traditionally having large storage compartments available underneath the bed itself.
They are appropriate for all ages from children to adults as they can be minimal and modern to suit the older generation or colourful and fun for the younger ages.
Although the captains bed might seem too traditional for the appropriate type of furniture for a child’s bedroom, it must be said that the style of the bed can still be very varied and offer exiting themes and styles that children will enjoy. For example the pirate ship themed captain bed often looks authentic as at the end of the day is supposed to be representing a sailing ship, which is where the idea originally came from. Such beds transform the child and their bedroom in to a swash buckling pirate on the rolling sea.
I always find that traditional wooden beds look far more stylish and more opulent than the newer aluminium types. Solid wood lasts longer, is less easily damaged and even smells nicer than other materials including non solid wood like MDF, which will help make the whole bedroom experience more enjoyable. As a result of this there are more traditional solid wood bed types like the captain bed on the market today. Other solid wood bed types include the platform bed, the bunk bed and of course the cabin bed.
Overall the captains bed is ideal for a room that has limited amount of space as it can provide a wealth of storage reducing the need to have separate drawers and in some cases a wardrobe. More and more families are turning to captains beds for their children’s or smaller guest bedrooms to provide a solid practical piece of furniture. Whether it is a cabin bed or a captain bed, the need to seriously think about furniture that as well as being comfortable can save space and ultimately money, has become more apparent in today’s economic climate.
